Canadian Province Study Permits: The Canadian Federal Government has issued Nova Scotia 12,900 study permits for international students attending post-secondary institutions. This is approximately 7,000 fewer than the number of permits the province issued to international students in 2023. As of October 2023, Nova Scotia had approximately 16,000 international students enrolled full-time.

The allocation of study permits will be distributed among 32 designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Nova Scotia, encompassing universities, community colleges, private career colleges, and language schools. Notably, the province officially hosts 41 DLIs, highlighting the careful consideration in distributing permits across various institutions.

Permit Allocations:

  • 11,565 permits for the province’s 10 universities and Nova Scotia Community College.
  • 710 permits for a dozen private career colleges.
  • 526 permits for nine language schools.

In addition, the province will set aside 99 application slots to address contingencies and provide flexibility in the administration of international student admissions.

Canadian Province Study Permits: Nova Scotia Higher Education Minister Brian Wong highlighted the province’s thoughtful distribution of study permits among institutions, taking into account factors such as program needs and community development. Wong is also advocating for more funding from the federal government to support Nova Scotia’s education sector.

The federal study permit, which is only available until Jan 22, is one of many steps IRCC is taking to stabilize the number of international students in the country and make the system more sustainable. In total, Canada plans to issue 360,000 study permits to international students in 2024, which is 35% less than the previous year.

The number of study permits corresponds to the number of Provincial Letters of Attestation (PAL) that a province can issue, and it is up to each province to decide how to issue study permits to study permit applicants who have received an offer to enroll at DLI.
