Cyberattack on ATMs: 1LINK, Pakistan’s payment gateway system, has issued a public advisory to address false rumors on social media and WhatsApp. These baseless claims warned of cyberattacks targeting ATMs and online banking services. However, 1LINK emphasizes that no actual cyber threat has been observed within the ATM and online banking ecosystem.
The financial services industry remains vigilant, and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) actively collaborates with banks and 1LINK to maintain the security of Pakistan’s financial infrastructure and digital payments ecosystem. This clarification follows a similar 2017 scare during the “Wannacry Ransomware” attack that targeted Microsoft Windows, including bank systems. Fortunately, the Pakistan banking sector successfully defended against those attacks.
The press release advises against sharing payment cards or personal information like card numbers, PINs, OTP, user IDs, and passwords.
“Be watchful of your surroundings while banking at ATMs, branches, or online, and report suspicious activities immediately,” it advised.
The central bank has consistently urged its affiliates to embrace digital frameworks. Digitalization offers many benefits, such as reducing the black economy and expanding the tax net by creating a more transparent economy.
However, digitalization also presents challenges, including cybersecurity risks, gaps in technology awareness, the need for user education, and policy loopholes.
In summary, 1LINK categorically denies any cyberattack on ATMs and assures the public that their financial transactions remain secure. Vigilance and cooperation among financial institutions continue to be crucial in safeguarding Pakistan’s digital payment systems.
