On June 30, 2025, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and U.S.-based Joby Aviation conducted the region’s first successful test flight of an all-electric air taxi, achieving a vertical takeoff, horizontal cruise, and vertical landing—an operational milestone for urban aerial mobility.
Desert Trial
The flight at a desert site proved the air taxi can carry five people, reach 200 mph, and cover 160 km. Officials stated the Dubai Air Taxi could complete the DXB to Palm Jumeirah trip in 12 minutes, versus 45min driving.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed shared on X:
“A major step that will shorten distances, enhance quality of life in Dubai, and reshape sustainable, eco‑friendly urban mobility.”
Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s director-general, added:
“It will introduce a new premium service for residents and visitors… ensuring a smooth and convenient experience for all passengers.”
Didier Papadopoulos, President of Aircraft OEM at Joby Aviation, emphasized:
“This test is one of many … marks the beginning of several phases leading to passenger operations next year.”

The eVTOL aircraft is 100 times quieter than helicopters, recharges in 8–10 minutes, and supports seamless, eco-friendly urban transport.
Commercial services will launch in early 2026, starting with routes from DXB to Dubai Marina, Downtown, and Palm Jumeirah areas. Joby has secured a six-year exclusive agreement with RTA and is developing vertiports at four key locations.
