Petrol prices in Pakistan just went up again, and the government is stepping in with relief for small vehicle owners. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a special fuel relief scheme that gives a Rs100-per-litre discount on petrol to motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqis, and cars up to 800cc.
The scheme comes right after a fresh price hike pushed petrol to Rs375.82 per litre and diesel to Rs403.32 per litre, driven largely by rising global oil prices amid tensions in the Middle East. Registration opened on Sunday, and the rollout starts within days.

PM Shehbaz Sharif announced the relief scheme on Sunday, saying the government would not leave the public to deal with rising fuel costs alone. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that petrol users of motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqis, and vehicles up to 800cc will get Rs100 off every litre of petrol.
The Ministry of IT and Telecommunication built the digital system behind the scheme in collaboration with NADRA, provincial excise departments, and telecom operators, so the subsidy can be verified and delivered automatically.

How To Register For The Petrol Subsidy
The process runs entirely through SMS, so there’s no app to download or office to visit.
- Send a registration SMS. Text REG followed by your CNIC number, vehicle registration number, provincial code, and vehicle registration date (in DDMMYYYY format) to 9771.
- Wait for confirmation. You’ll get an SMS confirming your registration was successful, once your CNIC, SIM, and vehicle details are verified against provincial Excise Department records.
- Request a fuel token before every fill-up. Before heading to the pump, send TOK to 9771 to get a one-time fuel-relief token.
- Show the token at the pump. Present the SMS token to the petrol station attendant, and the Rs100-per-litre discount is applied automatically, up to your monthly quota.
Since fuel prices are now revised daily under a rolling seven-day pricing formula introduced in July, it’s worth registering as soon as possible so you don’t miss out on savings while prices keep climbing.
Why The Government Is Stepping In Now
Pakistan imports a large share of its petroleum needs, so global crude oil price swings hit consumers directly and fast. With fuel prices rising almost daily since July and the government already collecting Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol, this scheme is meant to soften the blow specifically for lower- and middle-income commuters who rely on motorcycles, rickshaws, and small cars, not luxury vehicle owners.
It’s also not the government’s first move here. In March, federal and provincial governments had already agreed on a broader technology-based subsidy framework after an earlier price spike tied to the same regional conflict.
The Political Timing Behind The Announcement
The announcement lands at a politically sensitive moment. The government announced this two days before it resumes petroleum levy talks with Jamaat-e-Islami, which the Prime Minister requested to delay by a day, and about a week before the party’s planned long march on Islamabad. The timing suggests the relief scheme is also aimed at easing public pressure ahead of those negotiations.
Should You Register?
If you ride a motorcycle, Qingqi, or drive a small car, this scheme could save you up to Rs2,000–3,000 a month at current prices, but only if you register in time. The process takes two SMS messages: one to sign up, one for a token before every fill-up. With daily price revisions now the norm, that Rs100-per-litre cushion matters more than ever.
