NVIDIA Supercharges Jupiter, Europe’s New Supercomputing Giant

NVIDIA supercharges Jupiter supercomputer

Europe has taken a major leap in high-performance computing with the maiden benchmark of Jupiter—a new supercomputer developed by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, Eviden (formerly Atos), and Nvidia. As NVIDIA supercharges Jupiter supercomputer with cutting-edge technology, it marks a significant milestone in the continent’s quest for exascale performance. Deployed in Germany’s Jülich Centre, Jupiter hit 793 petaFLOPS, ranking No. 4 globally and fastest in Europe.

Exascale Milestone Missed

Yet while its debut marks a historic milestone, Jupiter has yet to reach the coveted exascale threshold of 1 exaFLOPS. The current run—drawing comparisons to the partial debut of the U.S. DOE’s Aurora—falls roughly 207 PFLOPS short of full exascale status (and about 220 PFLOPS behind Aurora itself).

European researchers expect the completed system later this year, possibly by SC25 in November, to break the exascale barrier.

Jupiter is built on Eviden’s BullSequana XH3000 architecture and will consist of around 6,000 Booster nodes, each powered by four Nvidia GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips connected via InfiniBand NDR200. The Booster partition alone includes approximately 24,000 GH200s, capable of delivering up to 1.6 EFLOPS of FP64 matrix performance and roughly 47 EFLOPS of dense FP8 AI compute—over half the AI performance of Petascale leader El Capitan.

“JUPITER is a key pillar of Europe’s digital sovereignty. Even today, it is setting new standards that demonstrate its potential for science, industry, and society in the field of artificial intelligence.”

Astrid Lambrecht, Board Chair, Forschungszentrum Jülich

In addition to intensive computing, Jupiter will feature a Universal Cluster of about 1,300 nodes based on Arm‑based Rhea1 CPUs—adding another ~5 PFLOPS of FP64 power

The system excels in energy efficiency too, achieving around 60 GFLOPS per watt thanks to efficient GH200 chips and warm‑water cooling—surpassing the 58 GFLOPS/W of El Capitan.

For the first time in 30 years, five of the Top10 supercomputers are in Europe, including Alps, Lumi, and Leonardo.

“JUPITER represents a historic milestone, already propelling Europe’s computing power to an unprecedented level, even before its final acceptance. … I am looking forward to seeing it reach its full performance in the coming weeks.”
