The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has officially introduced a National Skill Competency Test for students enrolled in information technology and computing-related degree programs. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements while improving the employability of IT graduates in both local and international markets.

This move comes as part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Pakistan’s digital workforce and enhance the global competitiveness of its IT sector.

Purpose of the New Skill Assessment

The newly introduced test evaluates practical, industry-relevant skills rather than purely theoretical knowledge. HEC designed the assessment to ensure that graduating students possess competencies aligned with the real-world demands of the technology industry.

By standardizing skill evaluation nationwide, the commission seeks to establish a common benchmark for IT graduates across public and private universities.

Collaboration With Industry Stakeholders

HEC developed the test in collaboration with key industry and government partners, including:

  • Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunication
  • Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB)
  • Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA)

This collaboration ensures that the assessment reflects current industry standards and evolving technological trends.

Benefits for Students

Students who perform well in the test will receive several academic and professional advantages, including:

  • A joint certification issued by HEC, PSEB, and P@SHA
  • Inclusion in a national talent pool accessible to employers
  • One academic credit hour added to their degree
  • Priority access to internships, apprenticeships, and international certifications

These benefits are designed to give students a competitive edge when entering the job market.

Impact on Universities and Institutions

HEC has instructed universities to ensure maximum student participation, as test results will also be used for institutional benchmarking. The performance data will help evaluate how effectively universities are preparing students for industry-level roles.

This approach encourages academic institutions to continuously update curricula and teaching methods in line with market needs.
