Authorities Bust Donkey Meat Racket in Federal Capital

Donkey meat racket in Islamabad

In a shocking discovery, the Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) has busted a large-scale donkey meat racket in Islamabad, uncovering an illegal operation in Tarnol, a suburban area of the federal capital. Acting on a late-night tip-off, IFA officials raided the facility and seized approximately 1,000 kg of donkey meat along with over 60 live donkeys believed to be intended for slaughter.

According to IFA Deputy Director of Operations Dr. Tahira Siddique, the team found a fully functional meat processing setup that was operating without any legal approval. “We received information late at night and dispatched teams immediately. Upon reaching the location, we found several live donkeys and a large quantity of meat,” she said.

Foreign National Arrested

During the raid, a foreign national allegedly supervising the operation was arrested and handed over to the local police. However, several other individuals involved in the racket managed to escape before the authorities arrived. Officials have registered an FIR and are actively investigating to identify and apprehend other members of the network.

Illegal Distribution Suspected

Initial investigations suggest that the sellers may have illegally distributed the meat to local markets and even exported it abroad. Authorities suspect that sellers distributed the donkey meat locally and exported it; they are now tracing supply chains and involved businesses. The lack of export permits and legal documentation further highlights the criminal nature of the operation. “Selling donkey meat without proper permission or documentation is illegal,” Dr. Siddique emphasized.

Public Health Concerns

The IFA destroyed all the seized meat on-site to prevent it from reaching the food supply chain. “We have the complete footage of the destruction,” Dr. Siddique added. The Donkey meat racket in Islamabad has sparked serious concerns about public health and food safety, especially as people may unknowingly consume unregulated meat.

Call for Stricter Oversight

The bust underscores the urgent need for stricter oversight and regulation of meat distribution channels in Pakistan. As the investigation continues, authorities urge the public to report any suspicious activity related to the illegal meat trade.
