Actor Eric Dane died on February 19, 2026, at the age of 53, following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease.

His family said he passed away surrounded by loved ones, including his wife and two daughters.
Dane had publicly revealed his diagnosis in April 2025, less than a year before his death.

ALS, also known as motor neurone disease, is a degenerative condition that gradually robs patients of the ability to move, speak, and breathe independently, and currently has no cure.

Breakthrough Role in Grey’s Anatomy

Dane rose to global fame by playing Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” on the hit ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.
Initially cast for a single appearance, he became a series regular and fan favorite, appearing from 2006 to 2012, with a brief return in 2021.

The charismatic plastic surgeon quickly became one of the show’s most recognizable characters, cementing Dane’s place in pop-culture television history.

Later Career and Role in Euphoria

In later years, Dane showcased a darker, dramatic range as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, which premiered in 2019.

He continued working even after his diagnosis and filmed material for upcoming episodes despite declining health.

Beyond these roles, Dane also starred as Captain Tom Chandler in TNT’s The Last Ship (2014–2018), further demonstrating his versatility across genres.

Advocacy After Diagnosis

Following his diagnosis, Dane became an outspoken advocate for ALS awareness and research, using public appearances and events to highlight the challenges faced by patients.

He was honored as an advocate by ALS organizations in 2025 and spoke publicly about wanting to remain present for his daughters’ future milestones.

Final Months and Health Decline

The illness progressively worsened, forcing Dane to withdraw from appearances and events in the months leading up to his death.
Despite these challenges, he continued to work and engage with advocacy efforts for as long as possible.

Family and Personal Life

Dane leaves behind his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.
Family members described them as “the center of his world,” highlighting his devotion to them throughout his illness.

Legacy in Television

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Eric Dane evolved from guest roles in television to leading performances in globally successful dramas.
He is best remembered for bringing charm, complexity, and emotional depth to characters that resonated with audiences worldwide.
