National Firewall Social Media: The federal government has taken a significant step towards controlling the content that users can post on social media platforms such as X, Facebook, and YouTube. A national firewall is being installed to monitor and regulate the flow of information on these platforms.
The primary function of this firewall is to inspect information from different internet protocol addresses. It will identify the locations generating propaganda material and block or reduce the visibility of such content. This move aims to prevent the spread of unwanted content and ensure that only appropriate and lawful information reaches a wider audience.
The firewall will have a broad scope, extending its monitoring to major social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, and X. “In addition to this, we are also preparing measures to control Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Despite the government blocking X for several months, many users continue accessing it through VPNs.
The blockade of X has resulted in a significant reduction in its use. From 4.5 million, the number of users in Pakistan has dropped to 2.4 million. It appears that the management of X is gradually complying with the federal government’s demands. They are taking steps to block accounts that spread controversial content or discuss sensitive information openly on the micro-blogging website.
This initiative by the government marks a new era in the control and regulation of social media content. It remains to be seen how this will impact the freedom of speech and expression of the users.
