The federal government of Pakistan is set to relaunch the BEEP messaging application, a locally developed communication platform designed specifically for secure official use. The move aims to provide government institutions with a reliable alternative to foreign messaging services while ensuring data security and sovereignty.
Briefing to the National Assembly Committee
The update was shared during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom, where National Information Technology Board (NITB) CEO Faisal Ratyal informed lawmakers that the BEEP app has been fully developed and approved by all relevant authorities.
According to officials, the application has undergone necessary security evaluations and is now ready for phased deployment across government departments.
Phased Rollout Across Federal Ministries
The relaunch will take place in phases, starting with federal ministries and their attached departments. The government expects the rollout to begin within the next two months, after which the platform may be expanded to other public sector institutions.
Officials emphasized that BEEP will support secure messaging and communication for public servants nationwide.
Enhanced Security and Encryption Features
The relaunch introduces advanced security features, including end-to-end encryption for text messages and video calls, ensuring safer official communication nationwide. These upgrades address concerns raised by committee members regarding the protection of sensitive government communications.
Authorities confirmed that the app has been cleared by the National Computer Emergency Response Team (NCERT), further strengthening confidence in its security framework.
Integration with e-Office System
BEEP will also be integrated with Pakistan’s e-Office system, allowing seamless coordination, messaging, and document sharing among government officials. This integration is expected to improve efficiency and reduce reliance on external platforms for official correspondence.
Reducing Dependence on Foreign Platforms
Officials noted popular apps like WhatsApp store data on overseas servers, sparking privacy, security, and data control concerns in Pakistan. In contrast, BEEP’s servers are hosted within the country, ensuring greater data protection and national power.
Strengthening Digital Sovereignty
The BEEP relaunch supports the government’s digital strategy, strengthening cybersecurity, ensuring data sovereignty, and encouraging local technology development nationwide. Once fully implemented, the app is expected to become the primary communication tool for official government use.
