Pakistan is set to experience another round of heavy monsoon activity as strong currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal penetrate the upper regions of the country starting on August 22. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the system is expected to intensify further with the arrival of a westerly wave that is anticipated to enter the region that night, increasing the likelihood of heavy rain and thunderstorms across multiple provinces.
Affected Provinces and Cities
PMD forecasts varying intensities of rainfall across Sindh, Punjab, KP, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, affecting multiple regions nationwide. Major urban centers, including Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Quetta, are expected to receive moderate to heavy downpours.
Sindh & Balochistan: Coastal districts like Karachi, Thatta, and Gwadar may experience heavy showers, with flash floods likely in low-lying areas.
Punjab & KP: Cities such as Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Swat, and Dir are forecast to see scattered thunderstorms with the risk of urban flooding.
Northern Areas: Landslides may occur in hilly terrain, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, as rainfall intensifies.
Urban Flooding and Flash Flood Risks
NDMA warns urban flooding in major cities, while heavy downpours in Balochistan and northern KP could trigger dangerous flash floods. Residents in vulnerable areas are being advised to take precautionary measures, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay alert for emergency updates.
Recent Monsoon Impacts
This forecast comes at a time when Pakistan is still reeling from the destructive effects of earlier monsoon spells. Last week, Buner’s cloudbursts killed hundreds in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while Karachi faced record 1979-level rainfall, flooding roads, and disrupting life. So far, over 650 lives have been lost nationwide during the ongoing monsoon season, according to NDMA reports.

Authorities’ Call for Preparedness
The government has directed local administrations to remain on high alert. Citizens are urged to secure their homes, prepare emergency supplies, and follow PMD and NDMA advisories closely. With the next wave of heavy rain and thunderstorms imminent, public cooperation will be crucial to minimizing risks and ensuring safety.
