The under-construction Mohmand Dam power production project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is set to start electricity generation by 2027, a major step toward boosting Pakistan’s clean energy capacity. Located on the Swat River, the project is one of the country’s most significant hydropower initiatives, aimed at producing 800 megawatts (MW) of affordable and sustainable electricity.
A Milestone in Pakistan’s Energy Sector
Approved in 2019, Mohmand Dam is rapidly being built as one of the world’s tallest concrete-faced rock-fill dams. Targeting completion by 2027–28, the dam will generate approximately 2.86 billion units (kWh) of electricity annually. This will significantly reduce Pakistan’s reliance on costly fossil fuel imports and cut carbon emissions.
Officials have confirmed that key components like the spillway, powerhouse, diversion tunnels, and power intake structures are progressing steadily. The river diversion—a major milestone—was completed in August 2024, allowing full-scale construction of the main dam body to proceed.
Multi-Purpose Benefits
Mohmand Dam will store 1.29 million acre-feet of water, aiding irrigation for new and existing farmland across thousands of acres. Additionally, it will supply 300 million gallons of drinking water per day to Peshawar, directly benefiting urban populations.
The dam helps prevent floods, offering vital protection to key districts like Peshawar, Charsadda, and Nowshera from severe flooding.

Government’s Commitment
Speaking about the project, a WAPDA official noted:
“The 800 MW Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project will start cheap and clean power generation by 2027… construction work on all key sites is progressing ahead at a good pace.”
