SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft faced another major failure as it exploded midflight for the second time this year. The incident, which occurred on March 6, 2025, not only disrupted the company’s testing program but also caused significant delays at major Florida airports.
The test flight, which launched from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas, aimed to advance the Starship program’s development for future deep-space missions, including potential Mars colonization. However, the mission ended abruptly when the spacecraft lost control and disintegrated over the Caribbean.
Starship’s Launch and Midflight Failure
The uncrewed Starship lifted off at 5:30 p.m. CT (6:30 p.m. ET) atop its Super Heavy booster. Initially, the mission seemed successful, as the booster executed a controlled descent and was secured by SpaceX’s launch tower arms. However, problems began during Starship’s ascent phase.
About 20 seconds before the planned engine cutoff, several engines began to fail, leading to a loss of attitude control. The spacecraft entered an uncontrolled spin, and communication was lost before it eventually broke apart.

FAA Grounds Flights in Florida
The midflight explosion raised safety concerns, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to halt flights at several major Florida airports. Airports affected included:
- Miami International Airport
- Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport
- Palm Beach International Airport
- Orlando International Airport
Departing flights were delayed by approximately 45 minutes, while some incoming flights had to be rerouted. The FAA cited concerns over falling debris as the primary reason for the flight groundings.

SpaceX Responds to the Failure
Following the incident, SpaceX released a statement confirming that the spacecraft had suffered a “rapid unscheduled disassembly” during ascent. The company emphasized that these test flights will identify issues and improve future designs.
Dan Huot, SpaceX Communications Manager, explained:
“Once you lose enough of those center engines, you’re going to lose attitude control.”
Despite this setback, SpaceX is committed to learning from each test and refining the Starship system for future missions.
FAA to Conduct a Mishap Investigation
The FAA announced that a mishap investigation would take place to determine the cause of the explosion. The agency stated:
“A mishap investigation is designed to enhance public safety, determine the root cause of the event, and identify corrective actions to avoid it from happening again”
This investigation will ensure that future Starship missions can proceed safely without posing risks to public aviation.
The Future of Starship
While this second failure is a blow to SpaceX’s timeline, such setbacks are common in the development of new space technologies. Starship remains a critical component of SpaceX’s vision to make space travel more accessible and eventually enable human missions to Mars.
With each test flight, SpaceX gathers valuable data to refine Starship’s design and improve its reliability. The company is expected to make design modifications and conduct additional test flights in the coming months.
Despite the recent failures, SpaceX remains optimistic that Starship will eventually achieve its goal of revolutionizing space travel.
