WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world with over 2 billion users. However, until now, users could only access their WhatsApp account on one phone, and to use WhatsApp web or desktop, the phone had to be connected to the Internet. That changes with the introduction of WhatsApp’s new multi-device feature, which allows users to add up to four devices to their account and use them independently, even when the phone is offline or low on battery.

According to a WhatsApp blog post, this feature has been one of the most requested by users and the most difficult to implement. The reason is that WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption to protect messages and calls between users, which means that only the sender and receiver can access them. To support multiple devices, WhatsApp had to develop a new architecture that syncs data across devices while maintaining the same level of privacy and security. Currently, the beta version can provide some device features to some users and will be gradually launched in the coming months. To enable it, users must open WhatsApp on their mobile phones, transfer to settings> link devices> Multi-Device beta, and then add a beta program. They can then connect to other devices by scanning the QR code on their phone.

When enabled, users can send and receive messages and calls from any connected device without being near their phones. They can also view their chat history and media across all devices and start new chats with contacts or groups. But multi-device mode still needs to support some features like showing real-time location, joining group calls from connected devices, or sending messages or calls to people using older versions of WhatsApp. WhatsApp says it will continue to improve capabilities for more devices and add more features over time. It also assures users that this feature will not compromise their privacy or security as all messages and calls remain fully encrypted and cannot be accessed by any third party. Multi-device capabilities are a big update for WhatsApp and a welcome addition for users who want more flexibility and convenience when using the app. It also gives WhatsApp an edge over competitors like Telegram or Signal, which don’t offer the same functionality.
