WhatsApp to End Support for Older Phones in 2025

WhatsApp End Support 2025

As technology evolves, so do the requirements for popular apps like WhatsApp. Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support older Android and iPhone models. This decision, made by Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, aims to enhance security and app functionality.

Affected Android Devices

Android devices running the KitKat operating system (OS) or older versions will no longer be able to support WhatsApp. This includes popular models such as:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

Affected iPhone Models

Older iPhone users have until May 5, 2025, to update their software. WhatsApp will no longer support iPhones running iOS 15.1 or lower. This means that iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus users will need to upgrade their devices or update to a newer iOS version to continue using the app.

Reasons for the Update

Meta has stated that this decision aims to improve security and app functionality. WhatsApp’s evolving innovations—such as encryption updates, multi-device support, advanced video calling features, and AI functionalities—require modern hardware and software to function effectively. Older devices are unable to support these new features and struggle to protect user data as technology advances.

Conclusion

The discontinuation of WhatsApp support for older devices highlights the importance of keeping up with technological advancements. Users with affected devices are encouraged to upgrade their phones or update their software to continue using WhatsApp and benefit from its latest features and security improvements.
