In a major push to improve user safety, WhatsApp has introduced new scam protection tools aimed at safeguarding users from fraud—especially in group chats and conversations with unknown senders. These WhatsApp scam protection tools are part of the platform’s broader initiative to enhance transparency and security, following a significant rise in global fraud-related incidents.
New Group Chat Safety
One of the key features rolled out is the “Safety Overview” screen. Now, when users are added to a group by someone not in their contacts, WhatsApp displays a warning page before entering the group. This includes useful information such as:
- Who invited you
- When the group was created
- The number of members
Potential warning signs (like if the group is new or unusually large)
This gives users time to evaluate the situation before interacting. Until the user chooses to stay, the group remains muted, and no messages are shown.
Contextual Alerts for Unknown Senders
WhatsApp is also beta-testing contextual alerts in private one-on-one chats. If someone outside your contact list messages you, WhatsApp will provide extra information—like how long the number has been on WhatsApp or if it was recently created. This helps users assess whether the message is suspicious before responding.
Crackdown on Scam Accounts
In 2025 alone, WhatsApp’s parent company Meta, has banned over 6.8 million accounts linked to scams. Many of these were involved in fake investment schemes, pyramid scams, or social engineering campaigns. According to Meta, many of these scams originated from Southeast Asia and targeted users across multiple platforms.

Expert Warnings and WhatsApp Advice
Clair Deevy, Director of External Affairs at WhatsApp, stated:
“These scammers are using multiple platforms to hide their tracks, and we’re working hard to stop them.”
Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security, added:
“They prey on kindness, desperation, and fear—emotionally manipulating victims into acting fast.”
To stay safe, WhatsApp encourages users to:
- Never share your six-digit verification code
- Enable two-step verification
- Confirm identities using a voice or video call
- Think twice before responding to urgent requests from unknown contacts
These new protections are being rolled out globally and mark a significant step in WhatsApp’s mission to keep its 2 billion+ users safe from fraud.
