A breakthrough in Pakistan’s technology sector has emerged as a Pakistani student has launched an Urdu-first generative AI model, similar to ChatGPT, named Qalb. The project aims to bridge the language gap in artificial intelligence by providing high-quality AI services to millions of Urdu speakers worldwide.
Introducing Qalb: An Urdu-Focused AI Model
Qalb is being described as the world’s largest Urdu-focused language model, developed to understand, process, and generate Urdu content with higher accuracy than existing systems. The developers trained the model on approximately 1.97 billion Urdu tokens, enabling it to deliver fluent, context-aware, and culturally relevant responses. Unlike global AI models focused on English, Qalb serves Urdu users directly and makes advanced AI tools accessible to non-English speakers.
Who Developed Qalb?
Taimoor Hassan, a Pakistani student pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science and Software Engineering in the United States, developed the AI model. He graduated from FAST University in Pakistan and has built a strong entrepreneurial record, successfully launching and exiting several globally recognized startups.
Hassan collaborated with his undergraduate teammates Jawad Ahmed and Muhammad Awais to bring the project to life.
Performance and Evaluation
Reports show that Qalb evaluated against seven international benchmarks outperformed existing Urdu language AI models. The evaluations suggest that Qalb delivers improved accuracy, comprehension, and natural language generation for Urdu text.
