In another blow to consumers, the Government of Pakistan has once again raised fuel prices, pushing the cost of petrol above Rs. 270 per litre. According to an official notification from the Ministry of Finance issued on July 15, 2025, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs. 5.36, bringing the new rate to Rs. 272.15 per litre. High-Speed Diesel (HSD) saw an even sharper increase of Rs. 11.37, raising its price to Rs. 284.35 per litre.
Government Justification
The government attributes this latest increase to rising international crude oil prices and the continued devaluation of the Pakistani rupee. Pakistan, which imports the majority of its petroleum products, is significantly impacted by fluctuations in the global oil market. The weakening of the rupee further intensifies the impact of these changes, making oil more expensive when converted into the local currency.
“The rise in fuel prices is a result of fluctuating international market trends, which have driven up global oil prices.”
Frequent Hikes Causing Economic Strain
This is the second consecutive hike in petrol prices this month. Earlier, on July 1, petrol prices were raised by Rs. 8.36, taking them to Rs. 266.79, while diesel was increased to Rs. 272.98. The back-to-back hikes are putting pressure on consumers, especially in the transportation and agricultural sectors, where fuel costs directly influence the prices of services and goods.
The price revisions are part of the government’s fortnightly fuel pricing policy, which adjusts rates based on global oil trends and currency exchange values. While this allows timely responses to international fluctuations, it also creates uncertainty for the public and businesses planning monthly budgets.

Public Reaction and Future Outlook
The price increase has sparked frustration among citizens and transport associations, with calls for the government to explore long-term energy alternatives and relieve pressure on imported fuel dependency. Unless international oil prices stabilize or the rupee strengthens, experts warn that further hikes cannot be ruled out.
“Petrol now costs Rs. 272.15 per litre, while diesel is Rs. 284.35 per litre. These figures are likely to climb if current trends persist.”
