GWM is trying to fix the mistakes of its first EV push, and the Ora 5 is the result. Instead of betting everything on one electric powertrain, Great Wall Motor’s Ora brand is giving buyers three choices under one small SUV: petrol, hybrid, and fully electric.
The Ora 5 has already started reaching showrooms in South Africa and Australia, with Europe following this summer and more markets, including Pakistan and Malaysia, lining up next. It replaces the Ora 3 hatchback as the brand’s main model and switches to a crossover-style body, a segment where GWM has struggled to gain traction until now.
Here’s everything confirmed so far about the GWM Ora 5, including specs, pricing across different markets, and where it’s headed next.
A Reset for GWM’s Ora Sub-Brand
GWM has been trying to build momentum for its Ora electric sub-brand since 2022, without much success. The earlier Ora 3 hatchback got positive reviews but never sold in big numbers, largely because of its price versus what buyers were getting.
The Ora 5 is GWM’s reset. Rather than offering a single EV variant, the automaker built one platform that supports a turbo-petrol engine, a self-charging hybrid setup, and a full battery-electric version. That flexibility lets GWM sell the same car in markets with very different appetites for EVs, from Europe and Australia to Southeast Asia and South Africa.
A hatchback and a wagon-style “Touring” version are also planned, expected to arrive toward the end of 2026 or in early 2027.
Size and Rivals
The Ora 5 measures 4,471mm long, 1,833mm wide, and up to 1,641mm tall, with a wheelbase over 2,700mm. That puts it above compact hatchbacks like the Suzuki Swift and slightly ahead of rivals such as the Hyundai Kona in outright length.
It’s positioned to compete with the BYD Atto 2, the Jaecoo J5 EV, and similar small SUVs in the growing affordable-EV space.
Powertrain Options
Petrol: A 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing around 118kW (160PS), paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Combined fuel consumption is rated at roughly 6.9L/100km on the WLTP cycle.
Hybrid: Combines the same 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor for a system output of around 223PS. GWM says a mechanical decoupling feature disengages the electric motor at highway speeds to cut drag and save fuel, switching in under 200 milliseconds.
Electric: A front-mounted motor producing 150kW (204PS) and 260Nm of torque, paired with a 58.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. GWM quotes a WLTP range of up to 435km, while some regional claims under the NEDC cycle go as high as 520km. Fast charging from 10 to 80 percent takes around 30 minutes.
Features and Interior
Standard equipment across the range includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a large 14.6-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air software updates, and a 360-degree camera. Higher Ultra trims add a nine-speaker audio system, ventilated and heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.
Safety-wise, the Ora 5 comes with seven airbags, including a centre airbag, plus rear cross-traffic alert and a door-open warning system. GWM says it has engineered the car to a five-star safety standard, though independent crash-test results from agencies like ANCAP are still pending.
Prices
Pricing varies significantly by market since GWM prices each powertrain separately:
| Market | Petrol | Hybrid | Electric |
| Australia | From A$30,490 | — | Up to A$35,490 |
| Germany | From €24,990 | From €26,990 | Not yet announced |
| South Africa | From R364,900 | From R424,900 | From R549,900 |
| Pakistan | — | — | Rs. 8,599,000 (ex-factory) |
In Pakistan, GWM has launched the Ora 5 in its all-electric form only, sold locally through the Sazgar Group. The ex-factory price is Rs. 8,599,000, with bookings open against an advance payment of Rs. 1,700,000. It slots in as GWM’s third Ora model in the country, positioned between the smaller Ora 3 and the larger Ora 7, and puts it in direct competition with the BYD Atto 3 and Jaecoo J6.
Prices and trims will differ once the Ora 5 lands in additional markets, so treat these as a starting reference rather than a global standard.

Availability
The Ora 5 is already on sale in South Africa, Australia, and Pakistan. A European launch, including Germany, is confirmed for summer 2026, and Malaysia is set to see a public debut soon. As of now, GWM has not confirmed a launch for the Ora 5 in the United States or India. GWM doesn’t sell in the US, and India launch remains uncertain, with no official confirmation for this model yet.
Hedging Against Slow EV Adoption
The Ora 5 shows how Chinese automakers are adapting to markets that aren’t ready to go all-electric yet. By selling petrol, hybrid, and EV models, GWM balances slower EV adoption in price-sensitive regions while competing strongly elsewhere.
Final Thoughts
The GWM Ora 5 is a practical bet rather than a flashy one. It avoids competing with every EV’s specs, instead offering buyers meaningful choice wherever they shop, emphasizing flexibility and accessibility. Success of that strategy hinges on local pricing realities, with GWM still needing solutions in several crucial global markets.
