The federal government has officially declared public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram (Ashura), providing a two-day break across the country in observance of one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved public holidays on June 25 and June 26, 2026, corresponding to 9th and 10th Muharram 1448 AH. The holidays will be observed by both five-day and six-day working offices throughout Pakistan.
Offices to Remain Closed on Ashura
The announcement means that government departments, public offices, and various institutions will remain closed during the two days. The holidays have been declared to facilitate religious observances associated with Ashura.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and holds immense significance for Muslims worldwide. The 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
Sindh Government Issues Separate Notification
In addition to the federal government’s decision, the Sindh government has also announced public holidays on June 25 and 26 across the province.
A notification issued by the Sindh Chief Secretary stated that all offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the administrative control of the provincial government will remain closed during the Ashura holidays. However, essential services will continue to operate as usual.
Security and Religious Arrangements
Authorities across the country have begun implementing special security measures for Muharram processions and gatherings. Provincial administrations are coordinating with law enforcement agencies to ensure peaceful observance of Ashura.
The two-day holiday will allow citizens to participate in religious activities and commemorative events held throughout Pakistan.
