North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was shown at a Pyongyang clothing and footwear exhibition on Monday, according to state media. The appearance came after unsubstantiated claims about his death or a medical emergency spread on social media.
The report arrived on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. It adds a fresh data point, but it does not settle every question.
What Happened?
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim toured the National Garment and Footwear Exhibition-2026 with his daughter on Monday, October 19. The photos, released on October 20, show him looking at children’s shoes and women’s coats and talking with officials.
KCNA said the show displayed more than 70,700 clothing items and over 170,000 pairs of shoes.
Where the Rumors Came From
According to NK News, the rumors began spreading on X between Sunday and Monday. Wanjun Xie, a US-based Chinese dissident, claimed Kim had suffered a brain hemorrhage and fallen into a coma. He later claimed Kim had died.
Some posts also claimed China had sent 9,000 troops to Pyongyang. None of this has been independently confirmed. Xie offered no medical records, named witnesses, or other verifiable evidence.
NK News said its analysis suggests the rumors spread through social sharing, possibly boosted by automated accounts. Several tabloids then reported the coma claim as if it were fact.
Succession Speculation
North Korea controls nearly everything the outside world learns about its leader. That makes health rumors easy to start and hard to disprove.
There is also a succession angle. Kim’s daughter, Kim Ju-ae, attended the expo. South Korea’s intelligence agency has reportedly said her role is growing. Her presence alone does not confirm any succession plan.

Official Statements
North Korean authorities have not directly addressed the death rumors. The photos have not been independently authenticated, and exactly when they were taken is unclear.
On September 30, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) reportedly told lawmakers Kim weighs around 140 kg and faces a higher cardiovascular risk. It reportedly found no significant signs of ill health.
Industry Impact: Not the First False Alarm
In 2020, Kim vanished from public view for weeks and death claims spread. He later reappeared at a fertilizer plant ceremony.
North Korea expert Benedict Rogers urged caution this time. He noted that past leader deaths were followed by organized public mourning, which has not been seen here.
Right now, the evidence points one way. State media shows Kim at a public event, and the dramatic claims have no verifiable proof behind them. But the images come from a government that tightly controls its own story, so independent confirmation is still limited.
Until credible, independent reporting says otherwise, the death claims remain rumors, not facts. We’ll update this story as new information comes in.
