The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that the first widespread spell of the 2026 monsoon season will begin during the first week of July, bringing rainfall to most parts of Pakistan. The weather system is expected to provide relief from the ongoing heatwave but may also trigger urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides in several regions.

According to PMD, moist currents from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are expected to penetrate the country. At the same time, a westerly wave will support the development of widespread rain and thunderstorms. The combined weather systems are likely to produce moderate to heavy rainfall across northern, central, and eastern Pakistan.

Areas Expected to Receive Rainfall

The forecast indicates that Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) will receive widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Parts of northeastern and central Punjab, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Sargodha, and surrounding districts, will experience moderate to heavy rainfall during the spell.

Rain will fall across Peshawar, Abbottabad, Swat, Chitral, Mansehra, Kohistan, and nearby areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Islamabad and adjoining regions are also likely to witness frequent showers.

Northeastern districts of Balochistan will receive isolated rainfall, while Sindh remains mostly hot and humid, with significant monsoon activity arriving later in the season.

Flooding and Landslide Warning Issued

The PMD has warned that heavy rainfall may trigger urban flooding in low-lying cities and flash floods in local streams and nullahs. Authorities have also cautioned about possible landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir between July 1 and July 6.

Local authorities advise residents living near rivers, streams, and hilly regions to remain alert and follow their instructions.

Relief From Heatwave

The monsoon’s arrival will significantly reduce temperatures across much of the country. Cities that have experienced intense heat over recent weeks are likely to see cooler weather after the rain begins. However, strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy downpours may disrupt traffic, damage weak infrastructure, and affect electricity supply in some areas.

Authorities Urge Preparedness

The PMD has advised relevant government departments, disaster management authorities, and local administrations to remain on high alert during the upcoming weather spell. Authorities urge citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and to stay informed through official weather updates.

As the first nationwide monsoon spell approaches, Pakistan transitions from extreme summer heat to wetter weather conditions, while the increased risk of flooding and landslides continues to pose a major concern.
