WhatsApp is taking a major step toward improving user privacy by introducing username reservations. The feature enables users to reserve a unique username today, ahead of its global rollout later this year, so they can chat with new people without revealing their phone numbers.
The update marks one of WhatsApp’s biggest privacy enhancements in years. Instead of relying solely on phone numbers, users will soon be able to identify themselves through usernames, similar to other messaging platforms, while maintaining WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.
A New Way to Connect
Traditionally, anyone wanting to message you on WhatsApp needed your phone number. With usernames, users can simply share their chosen handle instead, reducing the need to expose personal contact information.
According to Meta, the feature is designed to make conversations with new contacts, communities, businesses, and creators safer while keeping your phone number private.
Reserve Your Username Now
WhatsApp has begun allowing users to reserve usernames before the feature officially launches worldwide.
To reserve one:
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Account.
- Tap Username.
- Choose an available username and confirm it.
Once reserved, your username will be linked to your account and become available when the feature rolls out later this year.
Username Rules
WhatsApp has introduced several rules to ensure usernames remain unique and secure:
- Usernames must contain 3–35 characters.
- Each username must be unique.
- Certain usernames belonging to celebrities, organizations, and public figures are reserved to prevent impersonation.
- Users can update or remove their username whenever they choose.

Privacy Comes First
Unlike social media platforms, WhatsApp won’t create a public username directory. People will only be able to contact you if they already know your exact username.
Meta is also introducing an optional Username Key, adding another verification layer before strangers can message you, giving users greater control over who can reach them.
Benefits for Users
The new username system offers several advantages:
- Protects your phone number from strangers.
- Makes connecting with new people more secure.
- Simplifies sharing contact information.
- Reduces unwanted exposure in groups and communities.
- Offers better identity consistency across Meta platforms for eligible users.
Rollout Timeline
Meta says username reservations are available now, while the full username messaging experience will roll out gradually across supported countries later this year. Users who want their preferred username are encouraged to reserve it as early as possible before popular names become unavailable.
