Krafton just made one of its biggest mobile gaming announcements of the year. PUBG Mobile is getting a lighter version, and BGMI players in India are finally getting the same treatment.

The news broke on the final day of the PUBG Mobile World Cup 2026, when PUBG Mobile Producer Rick Li revealed PUBG Mobile LIGHT on stage. Hours later, KRAFTON India followed up with its own announcement for BGMI LITE, ending months of speculation.

If you play either game on a budget phone, or you’re just tired of clearing storage before every update, this is the update you’ve been waiting for.

PUBG Mobile LIGHT Confirmed at PMWC 2026

PUBG Mobile LIGHT was officially confirmed during PMWC 2026. According to Rick Li, the app is built for players who want to save storage, jump into matches faster, and put less strain on their devices, without losing the core PUBG Mobile experience.

Right after the global reveal, KRAFTON India posted a short, direct message on the official BGMI account: “You Asked. We Listened. BGMI LITE Coming Soon.” That’s the first real confirmation Indian players have had, after a January 2026 in-game survey asked the same question and got shelved with no follow-up for months.

Why Krafton Is Launching a Lighter App

This move is really about reach. Battlegrounds Mobile India has reportedly crossed 260 million downloads, but a large chunk of that audience is still on mid-range or budget phones, where the full game eats storage and struggles to run smoothly. A lighter client removes that barrier and opens the door to players who’ve been sitting on the sidelines.

It’s the same playbook Krafton already ran with the original PUBG Mobile Lite years ago, which required just 600MB of space and ran on 1GB RAM devices. This new LIGHT app appears to be a modern rebuild of that idea, aimed at low-end and mid-range Android and iOS devices in 2026.

Features

  • Smaller initial download, with no mandatory extra package before your first match
  • Additional content downloadable later, based on what you actually want to use
  • Classic Erangel map and core combat gameplay carried over from the main game
  • Existing PUBG Mobile accounts and owned items usable on LIGHT
  • Cross-version play with regular PUBG Mobile

Krafton hasn’t detailed graphics settings, supported devices, or minimum specs yet. Expect more of that closer to the pre-registration window.

Availability

  • PUBG Mobile LIGHT: Pre-registration opens August 25, 2026, globally
  • BGMI LITE: No pre-registration or release date yet; India-specific details expected “closer to release,” per KRAFTON

Official Statements

Rick Li confirmed that the app maintains PUBG Mobile’s quality and core gameplay while offering players a lighter, more accessible option, while the standard PUBG Mobile remains the full, primary version.

KRAFTON India’s statement was short but direct: “You Asked. We Listened. BGMI LITE Coming Soon.” Beyond that one line, the company hasn’t shared gameplay details, features, or a device requirement list for the Indian version.

Industry Impact

This puts pressure on rival battle royale titles like Free Fire and Call of Duty Mobile, both of which already run lighter, more accessible versions in markets like India and Southeast Asia. A leaner PUBG Mobile app could help Krafton hold onto budget-device players who’ve been drifting toward lighter competitors.

What This Means for Players

PUBG Mobile LIGHT is officially real, and pre-registration is just over a week away. BGMI LITE is also confirmed for India, but Krafton is clearly taking a slower, more cautious approach there, likely due to the regulatory review the original BGMI went through before its 2021 relaunch.

For now, mark August 25 for PUBG Mobile LIGHT pre-registration, and keep an eye on KRAFTON India’s official channels for the BGMI LITE timeline.
